The International Fair of Ségou
Thanks to the the various editions of the Festival sur le Niger , Ségou has become a major tourist destination in Mali and Africa. Since 2007, the CPEL Council for the promotion of the local economy of Ségou (www.cpelsegou.org) in partnership with the Festival sur le Niger organized a Craft and Agricultural Fair, the “ International Fair of Ségou .” Nevertheless, efforts are still needed for the promotion and visibility of local products especially after the sociopolitical crisis Mali has just experienced.
In Ségou, there are many companies, associations and local organizations that have extensive experience and knowledge in various fields of handicrafts and art crafts , furniture and food , especially the domains of bogolan and woven loincloth.
The International Fair of Ségou was created in order to give the opportunity to these local organizations and local producers (Gardeners , craftsmen, farmers, fishermen, traders, etc.) to benefit from the large national and international audience drained by the Festival sur le Niger, to sell their products and to create partnerships.
One of the tasks assigned to the CPEL, is the creation of the necessary conditions for a competitive and sustainable communal economy. The organization of the fair contributes to the achievement of this objective.
In the current context of crisis in Mali and the revival of economic activities in Ségou, the organization of this fair is an opportunity for traders to increase their revenues and create jobs.
The purpose of the International Fair of Ségou is to provide optimal conditions for actors of the local economy (craftsmen, gardeners, farmers, entrepreneurs, traders, etc.) around the creation of a local market during the Festival sur le Niger in order to create wealth and jobs; get business opportunities through exchanges and networking with other partners. The market consists of three components:
- an agricultural component ,
- a craft component and
- a component of art crafts .
The Internationa Fair of Ségou this year will be placed under the sign of national unity and reconciliation through the revival of the local economy. Twenty (20) stands will be offered to displaced craftsmen from the northern part of Mali to allow them to increase their income and to acilitate their return .
During this edition, particular emphasis will be placed on the quality of stands; the dimension of each stand will meet conventional standards (9m ²) with all amenities : tables , chairs, electricity. The stands will be decorated with local materials : mats, woven loincloth, to give this event a unique and authentic character.
Prizes will be awarded to the most innovative and creative exhibitors.
